It’s draft night and Green Bay drafts later than anyone else in the division. Here’s hoping the competition doesn’t do too well and the Packers hit gold.

Well, the QB’s go 1-2, and without a trade to be seen. That may kill some of the trade talk that was so prevalent pre-draft.

Pressure mounts as the Leonard Williams falls past the first five picks. Could possibly the best overall player of the draft fall to the Bears? Yes! I mean No! The Jets step up and grab Williams, leaving the Bears to pick up Kevin White — an intriguing wide receiver – but potentially limited. Wide receivers often need a year or two to make an impact and the pundits note the White only lined up on the right side during his senior season of college. It seems Chicago only broke even for giving up Brandon Marshall, although Marshall was getting older.

Dang, Trae Waynes is a good pick for the Vikes. But even he has warts, with his run support and limited use at Michigan State. It’s still a good pick.

Now there’s a gap. We watch as Melvin Gordon joyously hopes LaDainian Tomlinson comes to watch him run and he gets his first chance at playing against his good buddy Waynes. And now the two top backs are off the board before the Lions’ pick. That’s a good thing.

Dang, the Lions are getting smarter? They moved back a few spots and picked up an extra two fifths (one this year, one next) in a trade with the Broncos.

We’re two picks away from Malcom Brown still being available. Lions are on the clock. They need a replacement for Suh. Really, that close and GB loses him? Wait, they picked a super-high character lineman? I mean great pick, but Brown might reach GB. Another wide receiver. Dorsett; ranked 40th by long-time personnel man Gil Brandt.

That means Brown is still available.

Packers are on the clock. Their pick is in; there’s no trade. Wait for it…

Okay, it’s a safety with DB capabilities. Not a name we’ve heard much about. Damarious Randall from Arizone State.

May I project for a moment? They must be thinking he is a slot corner. Hayward can be that outside guy. Or Demetri Goodson is making a jump.

Hey, who am I to question Ted? Let’s look at his successes in recent years. Nick Collins! Shields! Hayward! Hyde! Ha Ha! GB’s two losses to big contracts, Tramon and Davon! He and his staff have been on a complete roll in the D backfield. I may not really recognize the name, but Brandt lists him 35^th, not much of a jump.

Now if it was the DL, I might be worried. They’ve been real hit-and-miss on the defensive line. Raji’s back, and so is Guion. Boyd, Pennel, even Khyri Thornton to go with Daniels and Datone Jones.

And the Patriots pick Brown to close it out. He later tells CSN New England’s Phil Perry, “Ya’ll about to get the best player ya’ll have ever drafted so just be ready for when I touch the field.”

Randall is a lot more humble when talking to the media, saying he will play either cornerback or safety, whichever the Packers want.
