COLLECTORS’ CORNER: ‘End of the Road’ for Green and Golden Car Show

After a three-year run, the Green and Golden Car Show will no longer help kick off the football season in conjunction with the Lambeau Field home opener, effective this year.
The first annual Green and Golden Car Show was held in Sept. 2013 immediately following the dedication of the Packers Heritage Trail Plaza located on the corner of Washington and Cherry streets. The car show was held in the parking lot adjacent to the newly-dedicated plaza and featured 20 “Packermobile” vehicles, hailing from several states. It was well-received by crowds from both the plaza dedication event as well as those who came out just to participate in or see the cars at the show. “Best of Show” honors winners took home a pair of tickets to the Packer game the next day.
In the ensuing years, the crowds have returned for the car show in and of itself but the organizers felt they had reached a plateau in terms of the “Packermobile” vehicle owners they were able to reach and convince to enter the event.
“We know we could continue to attract the same 15 to 20 cars every year,” organizer Sean Schultz said, “but we really wanted to take it to another level.”
They had appealed for additional vehicles to enter the event through print advertising in several area publications, as well as on area websites. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to connect with a statewide or larger audience, which we felt would be necessary to ‘get it to the next level,’” Schultz said. They had also patrolled the Lambeau Field parking lot at several preseason games the first two years to contact and sign up vehicle owners who had brought their Packermobiles to the games.
“We also tried to get a short notice or ‘honorable mention’ on packers.com,” she explained “but only ‘Packers events’ are allowed to do that.” She said that ‘Packers events’ are defined as “events owned by the Packers, with all aspects of those events handled by the Green Bay Packers.”
“It’s unfortunate but essentially, The Green and Golden Car Show has run into some unresolvable growing pains,” she added with a smile, “but it’s been a good ride!”
Organizers Chris Wood and Sean Schultz extend their sincere thanks to the City of Green Bay, The Green Bay Packers and MultiMedia Channels for their support in having been the major sponsors of the event.
